At Great Orton Primary School English is taught as as its own subject, making links to other subjects where it is relevant to do so. We aim to build on previous learning which starts in Reception where early phonics work takes place and the beginnings of a love of language and reading starts to grow. Holding a pencil, making marks soon leads to letter formation and the start of writing. This is built upon in subsequent years as children become enriched in a wealth of different texts and language experiences so that they are capable readers and writers as they leave Year 6, ready for Secondary school.

English is taught in the mornings for at least an hour a day. We cover the English National Curriculum and adapt to our mixed age year groups by planning work on cycles that last 2 years. We are very proud of our English work, children take care and pride in the quality of their work and we celebrate our successes, no matter how small.
